Information on Home Birth

Did you know you can hire your own midwife?

An independent midwife works for you, not a hospital. Independent midwives are dedicated and passionate about supporting women's choices. If you want a gold standard of care, consider hiring an independent midwife. An independent midwife is particularly for women choosing to birth at home although some may take on clients who are planning a hospital birth.

One of the huge advantages of hiring an independent midwife is continuity of care. You will see the same care provider throughout your pregnancy and she will be a trusted friend by the time you give birth. Being surrounded by people you are familiar with and trust is an essential ingredient to a safe and satsfying birth experience!

Homebirth is an option for all women

Historically speaking, the natural place to give birth is at home. Birthing in a hospital is a very new concept which emerged only last century. Birthing in the comfort of your own home has many advantages. First and foremost, you are able to forgo the dreaded "drive-to-the-hospital-while-in-labour" ordeal! A woman is also more likely to feel safe in a familiar and private environment. This gives her the best possible chance to labour and birth without the need of any intervention. Every intervention carries risks for mother and baby and are only valuable when really necessary. A midwife is highly skilled and will be able to identify if there is a problem which requires transfer to a hospital. A midwife can also refer you to specialists during your pregnancy if the need arises.

Waterbirth

Perhaps one of the most beautiful things about homebirth is the opportunity to birth in water.  (This is available in some hospitals but each hospital has different policies on this).  It is common for women birthing at home to purchase or hire a birth pool which is much deeper than an ordinary bath.  Waterbirth has many benefits for both mother and baby.

Putting a price on Homebirth...

In Australia we are so used to now birthing in the hospital and this being covered by Medicare that for many women it will be a bit of a "culture shock" to consider birthing at home and paying for it out-of-pocket - but it really is worth it!! Women who have experienced a homebirth rarely go back to the hospital for subsequent births - that says a lot! Perhaps it is most telling by the way women speak of their homebirths:

Amazing...

Beautiful...

Intimate...

Special...

Empowering...

PRICELESS!!!
